Angels, of old spiritual helpers, don’t have any material form. Hanneke de Munck gives them an almost complete human shape and a strong, abstracted wing section, whereas the human stature represents the angel’s longing for contact with man and the abstract wings express the intangible spiritual power with which the angel associated.
110 cm high, made in the Oude Kerk in Amsterdam, 1984.
In the Oude Kerk I had my temporary workshop. I was inspired by the atmosphere, the space of the building and the history of the many people who congregated there. It is a figure close to man, that chose to appear in earthly form and thus to be able to be in touch with humans. The statue has the shape of an upside-down triangle – the base is at the top.
